Morrisville Butterfly Icon
I was selected by The Town of Morrisville as one of five artists for its public art initiative celebrating the butterfly as a symbol of the community. I designed and painted a 4-foot fiberglass butterfly sculpture that will soon be installed in a Town-owned public space.
My design was meant to evoke the grounding comfort of community and encourages viewers to look to the future with a sense of hope and childlike wonder. I chose to prominently feature several flowers that are native to Morrisville, including: Dogwood, Tickseed, and Violets.
As the national flower of North Carolina, Dogwood flowers symbolize hope, transformation, and resilience. Tickseed flowers are known for their bright yellow blooms (and their odd name), and represent joy and happiness. Finally, the purple flowers that appear on the base of the sculpture are Wild Violets and symbolize wisdom, empathy, and peace.
These flowers and what they represent encapsulte the Morrisville community and what it feels like to live here.
